Is a GLP-1 right for me, and who should not take one?

GLP-1 medications can be an effective tool for weight management when used with lifestyle changes and medical supervision. A quick self-check: if you've struggled to lose or maintain weight with nutrition and exercise alone, are willing to self-inject once weekly, and can commit to prioritizing protein, fiber, and hydration - GLP-1 treatment may be worth exploring.

Good candidates:

  • Adults with obesity or overweight who want medically guided weight loss.

  • People aiming to reduce health risks tied to excess weight (like pre-diabetes or high blood pressure).

  • Patients open to gradual dose increases to balance results and side effects.

  • Those who prefer the convenience of telehealth care.

Who should not use a GLP-1

GLP-1 medications are not safe for everyone. Your provider screens for all of this during your assessment.

Absolute contraindications:

A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or a diagnosis of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (this is a boxed warning). A serious hypersensitivity to the active drug or its components. Pregnancy for weight-management purposes — semaglutide should be discontinued at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy, and both tirzepatide and semaglutide should be stopped immediately if pregnancy is recognised.

Major cautions:

A history of pancreatitis. Gallbladder disease risk, since rapid weight loss can increase the chance of gallstones. Risk of acute kidney injury with dehydration — keep fluids up, and pause the medication if you have persistent vomiting or diarrhea. Severe GI disease, significant unmanaged kidney impairment, or breastfeeding.

If any of this applies to you, your provider will discuss it with you during your review.
